Koji Takahashi
Composer
Born in Tokushima, Japan.

Koji Takahashi began composing at the age of twelve and went on to complete both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in composition at Tokyo University of the Arts, studying with Norio Fukushi, Jo Kondo, and Akio Yasuraoka. He participated in the Yokohama International Film and Video Festival “CREAM” (2009) and was selected for the Takefu Composition Award (2010).

In 2013, he received a full scholarship from the Danish Government and continued his studies at the Royal Danish Academy of Music under Hans Abrahamsen. Drawing on the transparency of Nordic sonorities and the Japanese sensibility of ma (perceptual space and timing), Takahashi creates works that traverse opera, chamber music, film, dance, animation, and sound-based narrative forms. His practice integrates music, text, movement, image, and atmosphere, balancing structural clarity with an acute sensitivity to storytelling. He writes his own librettos, creates visual materials, and works across disciplines without boundaries.

Selected Works and Activities
In 2018, he presented his first portrait concert at Shibuya Classics, followed by the premiere of his Violin Concerto “Pau Pau Concerto” commissioned by the Copenhagen Philharmonic, performed six times across Denmark.
In 2019, he held his second portrait concert, featuring works for which he also wrote the lyrics.
His chamber opera Admist dust and fractured voices premiered in Belgium in 2020; its Japanese version, retitled PLAT HOME, received the President’s Award at “TOKYO GEIDAI ARTFES 2023.”
Other recent works include 17 Etudes: Piano × Dance (2021) and the Japanese-language opera The Long Ending (2024), for which he wrote both the music and libretto.
He composed the score for the feature film A Fool’s Love (2024), expanding his work across theater, film, dance, and contemporary art.
In July 2025, his lecture-performance opera Absolute Absolute Absolute Pitch Fundamentalist premiered at Kanagawa Prefectural Music Hall.

Instrumental works such as Hitomi for solo shakuhachi, 3 Intermezzi for viola (set piece for The Danish String Players Contest), and two lines for two pianos and video are also widely recognized.
From 2020 to 2023, he served as a part-time lecturer at Showa University of Music and its Junior College.

Podcast: “Books-Reading Mouse”
Takahashi hosts the literary and cultural-criticism podcast Books-Reading Mouse, an unusual endeavor for a composer. Featuring conversations with film scholars and cultural historians, the program ranges from Michel Houellebecq and modern Japanese literature to contemporary music and social issues, known for its quiet sharpness and incisive perspective. His interest in both sound and language directly informs his musical work.
