17 Etudes — Piano × Dance
17 studies and their choreography (2021)
ABOUT THE WORK
A stage version of 17 Etudes, originally composed in 2017 for music and video. Choreographer and dancer Akiyoshi Nita develops the distinct theme of each study into movement, accompanied by pianist Motoshi Miyazato.
The performance explores the connection between music and the body. Actions such as stopping, delaying, imitating, zooming, focusing and repeating move from the screen into live choreography.
Nita created a separate choreography for each of the seventeen musical themes. Miyazato performs the piano part live; Uemura’s direction and lighting shape their presentation on stage.
